As a part of the Whitaker Jazz Education initiative, Jazz St. Louis’ Adopt-a-School program began through generous support from the Whitaker Foundation. The adopted schools receive a higher level of involvement from Jazz St. Louis that includes programming and services tailored to each school’s needs.
Jazz St. Louis partnered with the Normandy School District in the fall of 2007 and in 2008 began a partnership with the East St. Louis School District. The Adopt-a-School program allows for visits by both world-class artists and the area’s finest educators. During the 2009-10 season Mulgrew Miller, Dr. Gene Aitken, James Carter, Terell Stafford and the Clayton Brothers worked with students in Jazz St. Louis’ two adopted school districts.
