Chick Corea and Béla Fleck last performed together in 2008 following the release of their groundbreaking album of duets, The Enchantment. Five years later, they are back together touring the country. Two of the most gifted and adventurous improvisers in the world on their respective instruments, pianist Chick Corea and banjo player Béla Fleck unite for an evening of duets to kick off the 2012-13 Jazz St. Louis at the Touhill series.
Two musical worlds collide whenever Chick Corea and Béla Fleck take to the stage, with musical genres flying fast and furious. These two master musicians weave duets out of staggering virtuosity, creating a mind-blowing, magical concert hailed “supernatural” by the Washington Post and leading the BBC to claim “It’s everything a collaboration of this caliber should be – perhaps even a little bit more.”
Béla Fleck, widely considered the premiere banjo player in the world, lives to improvise and loves to work with unexpected musical fusions. In high school, Fleck began his experimentation by playing bebop on the banjo. His mix of jazz and bluegrass, dubbed “blu-bop,” with his band, the Flecktones, was an unexpected commercial success, as well as critically-acclaimed and award-winning. Fleck has won 14 Grammys and has been nominated in more categories than anyone in Grammy history, including jazz, bluegrass, pop, country, gospel, composition, and world music.
A DownBeat Magazine Hall of Famer and NEA Jazz Master, twenty-time Grammy winner, and undisputed keyboard virtuoso, Chick Corea has attained living-legend status after four decades of unparalleled creativity and an artistic output that is simply staggering. Corea is the fourth-most nominated artist in the history of the Grammys with 61 nominations. He’s also earned three Latin Grammy Awards-including one with Fleck for The Enchantment. From straight ahead to avant-garde, bebop to fusion, children’s songs to chamber music, along with some far-reaching forays into symphonic works, Chick has touched an astonishing number of musical bases in his illustrious career while maintaining a standard of excellence that is awe-inspiring. A tirelessly creative spirit, Corea continues to forge ahead, continually reinventing himself in the process.
