East St. Louis High School Jazz Band

We are very proud to announce that the East St. Louis High School Jazz Band—one of our adopted schools—has been selected as one of only 15 jazz bands throughout the country to participate in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition and Festival. This event will be held May 12-14, 2011 in New York City. Thanks to your generous support, the band is able to accept the invitation, travel to New York City, and have the honor of appearing on a national stage with the best of the best American high school bands—including a chance to perform for Wynton Marsalis.

As a special send-off to celebrate this group and their nomination, Jazz St. Louis will be presenting the East St. Louis Jazz Band at Jazz at the Bistro for a 90-minute set on May 5 at 8:30 p.m., with a special appearance by Mardra and Reggie Thomas. Tickets are $20 for adults – $10 for students and can be purchased via all Metrotix locations, online at metrotix.com, or by calling Metrotix at 314.534.1111 or the Jazz St. Louis offices at 314.289.4030. Proceeds from this event will continue to support our Adopt-a-School program, bringing more jazz to more students.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll introduce you to some members of the band as we follow them on their exciting journey to NYC.

I am writing to you in hopes you can help me get the word out to your students about a volunteer opportunity for trumpet players in 8-12 grades.

I am a high school student in Oklahoma and the founder of the Youth Trumpet & Taps Corps. We are a 501c3 non-profit, and we train and recognize high school trumpet players who volunteer to sound Taps at veterans’ funerals.

We are hosting a free Taps for Veterans training for high school trumpet players on April 2nd at the Pavilion at Lemay in St. Louis.

Participants will get free training, a t-shirt, and a Kelly Mouthpiece for participating.

Students can sign up on our website: http://trumpetandtaps.org/volunteer/stlouis/

    Thank you for your consideration,

    Katie
