“Nothing short of a revelation.” Jazziz
One of jazz’s most versatile and popular performers for more than four decades, pianist and composer Joe Sample remains a pioneer of contemporary jazz piano. A founding member of the influential group The Jazz Crusaders, Sample focused on the acoustic piano during the group’s early years (late 50s-early 60s) but began to place greater emphasis on electric keyboards when the band turned to jazz/funk in the early 70s. They then dropped “Jazz” from their name and went on to garner multiple gold and platinum albums until the band dissolved in the mid 1980s. In 2010, Sample re-formed The Jazz Crusaders and, in addition to his solo performances, continues to perform with them today. His appearance with the band at the Touhill as part of Jazz St. Louis’s 2011-12 season prompted the St. Louis Post-Dispatch to call the event “…the finest Jazz St. Louis presentation of the year.”
