Saint Louis Art Museum Grand Opening Celebration

Join SLAM on Art Hill Plaza, in front of the Saint Louis Art Museum, for a concert presented by Jazz St. Louis. This concert is the first in an exciting new series offered by SLAM in partnership with St. Louis area arts organizations, and is also the featured performance for the Art Museum Expansion’s opening night celebration! Each month, June through September, a St. Louis arts organization will present a different musical style featuring area performers. Admission is FREE and tickets are not required for these performances.

Phil Dunlap June 2013_Photo by Devin Rodino-4Grammy Award-winner Nicholas Payton, widely considered the greatest living trumpet player, will appear as a special guest with the Phil Dunlap Quintet for this opening night concert. Pianist Phil Dunlap, Jazz St. Louis’s Director of Education and the leader of the Legacy Jazz Quintet, has put together a new project with an all-star lineup of St. Louis’s finest musicians. Featuring Montez Coleman on drums, Jahmal Nichols on bass, Danny Campbell on trumpet, and Ben Reece on tenor saxophone, the Phil Dunlap Quintet will perform a hard-swinging mix of originals and hard-bop standards in the vein of Horace Silver, Cannonball Adderly, and the Jazz Messengers. St. Louis tenor sax legend Willie Akins and vocalist Brian Owens will also be featured guest performers during the show.

Please reschedule this for a future date. We were so disappointed the concert was canceled due to weather. Thanks.

Yes, it was unfortunate. SLAM is looking at rescheduling, but Nicholas Payton would more than likely not be part of the new date. We’ll update this page with any new info as it becomes available. Sorry for the inconvenience.
