Extravajamza, the 2010 Jazz St. Louis Gala, proved to be the largest and most financially successful gala in our history. The night started off in the Arch View Ballroom at the Hilton St. Louis at the Ballpark with a wonderful cocktail hour featuring music from the Jazz St. Louis All-Stars, our top group of high school students. St. Louis’ own Funky Butt Brass Band then marched the guests to the Grand Ballroom for dinner before taking the stage for a few songs of their own. Following dinner, Kim Tucci of the Pasta House Co. kicked off the auction with a bang. The highlight of the auction came near the end when Jazz St. Louis Executive Director Gene Dobbs Bradford’s item went up for bid. Gene’s famous Gourmet Feast for Ten ended up being auctioned off three times for an astounding $3,500 apiece. Following the auction, St. Louis favorite Good 4 the Soul took the stage, later joined by legendary saxophonist Houston Person. The night ended with the Jazz St. Louis All-Stars sitting in with Good 4 the Soul and Houston Person on the tune “Bag’s Groove.”
Over 400 people joined us for this incredible night of music and generosity, and in the end, Jazz St. Louis netted over $165,000 for its various education and outreach programs. A big thank-you goes out to all who donated their time or money to making this event possible, especially Gala 2010 Chairs Richard and Kathie Winter, Corporate Chair Warner Baxter, Advisory Chair Joan Quicksilver, Development Chair Steve O’Loughlin and Board President Pam Trapp. Also, thank you to Cordell Whitlock for being a wonderful emcee for the second year in a row and to Carlos Brown, Sr. for speaking on behalf of the JazzU program. Let’s make Gala 2011 even better!
