JazzU and JSL All-Star Students Make All-State

Phil Dunlap

We want to congratulate those students in Missouri and Illinois who made their respective All-State jazz bands!  The All-State process takes the top student musicians in each state and puts them together for a special concert.  The audition process is rigorous and it is an honor to announce that one-third of the Missouri All-State jazz band is involved in either the JazzU or Jazz St. Louis All-Star program.

Of particular note is that the entire Missouri All-State jazz band rhythm section is made up of students involved in JSL programs.

2011 Missouri All-State Jazz Band:

Wil Gerdel (alto sax)- JazzU, Lindbergh High School
Michael Ferrante (tenor sax) – Jazz St. Louis All-Stars, Ft. Zumwalt North High School
Eliot Courtois (piano) – Jazz St. Louis All-Stars, Lindbergh High School
Logan Miller (guitar) – JazzU, Francis Howell Central
Sam Fruend (bass) – Jazz St. Louis All-Stars, Webster Groves High School
Eric Grumke (drums) – JazzU, Webster Groves High School

Alternates:

Matt Baldwin (alto sax) – Jazz St. Louis All-Stars, Westminster Christian Academy
Greg Dallas (guitar) – JazzU, Clayton High School

From the Illinois side, Brady Lewis (trumpet) a JazzU member and student at East St. Louis High School made the cut.

We would also like to congratulate each student’s school, band director, parents and private teacher.  We can take some of the credit, but the majority of the work and achievements of these students is made possible by the hard work and time put in by those support groups.  Congrats to all!
