With support from the Whitaker Foundation, four area organizations are collaborating to present two free summer concerts featuring multi-Grammy Award-winning jazz trumpeter and composer, Terence Blanchard.
The Missouri Botanical Garden, Grace Hill Settlement House, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, and Jazz St. Louis have pooled resources to present Blanchard and his quintet on June 12 as part of the “Whitaker Music Festival” at the Missouri Botanical Garden (RSVP on Facebook) and on June 13 as part of the Grace Hill “Whitaker Urban Evenings” in St. Louis Place Park (RSVP on Facebook). Underwritten through a grant from The Whitaker Foundation, both performances are free and open to the public. Attendees may bring food and drink to either public performance.
Blanchard was originally co-commissioned by Opera Theatre of Saint Louis and Jazz St. Louis to compose the music for the upcoming June world premier of “Champion,” an opera in jazz. Blanchard’s engagement as composer for “Champion” was also made possibly by a grant from the Whitaker Foundation.
Since Blanchard’s involvement in “Champion” was announced, the New Orleans native has been warmly embraced by the St. Louis arts community and made numerous public appearances in support of the opera. In the fall of 2012, Blanchard opened Jazz St. Louis’s 2012-13 Jazz at the Bistro subscription series.
“The Whitaker Foundation is pleased to support Mr. Blanchard’s summer concert appearances at the Botanical Garden and St. Louis Place Park, allowing the broader St. Louis community to experience this incredible musician, composer, and adopted artistic son of St. Louis,” said Christy Gray, Whitaker Foundation executive director.
